HVAC basics: what your system is trying to accomplish
Your HVAC system has a simple mission with a lot of moving parts: move air, condition it (heat or cool it), clean it, and circulate it where you need it. When everything is working together, you get consistent temperatures, better comfort, and a system that doesn’t have to work harder than it should.
A typical home comfort setup is often built around a central system that:
- pulls air from your home through return ducts
- passes that air through filtration/air cleaning
- heats or cools it using indoor equipment
- pushes it back through supply ducts into your rooms
That’s the big picture. Next, let’s zoom in on cooling, because understanding air conditioning clears up a lot of HVAC confusion.

What happens to your air
How a central air conditioning system works (split-system overview)
In a typical split system design, your furnace contains a fan that forces air through the system during both the winter and summer months. That same air-moving engine is a huge part of comfort.
One upgrade we’re big on: a variable speed fan in your furnace improves heating and cooling efficiency, provides better comfort and indoor air quality control. If you’re comparing options, we believe it’s worth prioritizing.
Here’s what happens once indoor air is pulled into the HVAC system:
1) The air is filtered (and filtration matters)
Air cleaners are positioned between the return air ducts and the furnace. The air cleaner can have a high MERV rating—MERV is the standard used to rate the effectiveness of air cleaners—and can filter microscopic elements out of the air.
This is one of those “small part, big impact” areas. Good filtration supports comfort, keeps equipment cleaner, and helps manage what you breathe day-to-day.
2) The air is cooled at the evaporator coil
Cooling happens indoors at the evaporator coil. As warm air passes over it, heat is removed from the air. The result is air that feels cooler and more comfortable.
3) Keeping the coil clean helps efficiency (and can help with mold)
The interior of an evaporator coil system can be damp, and mold can grow there. That can affect the health of your family (through mold spores in the air) and the health of your HVAC system by decreasing the coil’s efficiency.
One approach used in some HVAC designs is a UV lamp mounted within the evaporator coil. UV lamps are able to kill and prevent mold from growing—helping keep the system cleaner and the coil operating efficiently.
4) Cooled air is sent back into the home
After leaving the evaporator coil, the cool, dehumidified air is pushed back into the home through your ductwork.
In extremely humid climates, a separate dehumidifier can be installed to remove more humidity than what’s removed by the evaporator coil alone.
5) Ventilation: exchanging air can be part of the plan
Depending on the setup, a ventilator may be part of an HVAC design to exchange air. Ventilation is its own topic—but at the 101 level, it helps to know that HVAC isn’t just about temperature. It’s also about the quality and management of the air moving through your home.

Maintenance 101: how to keep your system running its best
Just like a vehicle, your home comfort system needs routine maintenance to keep it running at peak performance. Without routine service, heating and cooling systems waste energy and are more likely to break down. With the proper attention, they can keep you comfortable year-round.
A few general maintenance guidelines:
- Heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces and boilers need a yearly professional tune-up.
- Gas-fired equipment burns cleaner and can be serviced every other year, though yearly scheduled maintenance is still ideal.
And what does a professional tune-up look for? A close inspection can uncover issues like leaks, soot, rust, rot, and corroded electrical components—exactly the kinds of problems that can quietly reduce performance or lead to bigger repairs later.
